The search for the 2018 Miss Malawi finally came to an end last night at the grand finale of the beauty pageant at the Bingu International Conventional Centre.
The five panel of judges settled for Tionge Munthali to take over the crown from Ceceila Khofi after impressing in all requirements, such as confidence and poise.
Mwabi Mfune was crowned 1st princess and Chimwemwe Buleya 2nd Princess. Tadala Uta was named 2018 Miss. Face.
The newly crowned queen, Tionge, has promised to take a leading role in the fight against rapid population growth. She says her focus will among others lean towards promoting women and youth in the country.
Guest of Honor at the event, Vice Lady Mme. Mary Chilima, hailed the event saying it will go a long way in incorporating the youth in efforts aimed at managing Malawi’s rapid population growth.
Mme. Chilima called for enforcement of by laws in schools and communities to curb early pregnancies and teen marriages.
“Over population is giving pressure to resources in the country. For example, Chikangawa forest has been depleted because of over population. Water boards are struggling to provide water to Malawians because of over population,” she said.
On behalf of organizers, Teresa Ndanga of Zodiak Broadcasting Station hailed the outgoing queen, Cecelia Khofi, for her dedication during her tenure of office, saying she managed to engage people of all walks of life, such as members of parliament, in spreading the message about rapid population growth.
The 2018 beauty pageant saw Munthali going away with a Nissan Tilda vehicle and other prizes.
The theme for the contest this year was “Controlling Overpopulation”
