www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SJR81-JIwAGuitarist/vocalist Amadou Bagayoko and vocalist Mariam Doumbia met at Mali’s Institute for Young Blind People, where they were both students and teachers. Today, the married couple and musical partners better known as Amadou & Mariam are the faces of contemporary West African music, combining traditional Malian music with everything from Cuban song and brass-driven funk to reggae and Delta blues. When the duo began in 1980, however, they had to travel hundreds of miles to Abidjan in Cote D'Ivoire, which until recently was one of the cultural and economic centers of Francophone West Africa, to make cassettes and perform. Within the next decade, they were playing in Europe and winding up on compilations from Western music labels. With eight studio albums, including several on U.S. labels like Nonesuch, and collaborations with famed international artists like Manu Chao and Somali rapper K’Naan, Amadou & Mariam continue to celebrate and expand the limits of Malian music in concerts around the world.
