In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Morocco's Gnawa Festival, musicians and academics from around the world come to New York so celebrate this ancient musical tradition. Gnawa music was inspired by the migration of people to Morocco as a result of slavery or war. It was originally marginalized within the country, but now, it has risen and has begun to emerge as the premiere sound out of Morocco. The songs often represent themes of longing for family, or spiritual communion.
