Bayaka villagers dancing and singing, CAR

  • Bayaka villagers dance and sing in the southern Central African Republic.
The Bayaka live in southwestern Central African Republic and northern Congo and are a distinct ethnic group from the Baka. Their music is complex and polyphonic, and forms an integral part of their way of life; songs and dances are not confined to entertainment or rituals, but also as part of hunting, games, stories, and various other aspects of daily life.
Typical Bayaka music is made from characteristic vocal techniques most commonly Jodel, a transferrence of voice from chest to head. The Bayaka use instruments such as cylindrical drums, flutes and musical bows, their songs and dances involving a lot of structured improvisation.
