This is What Ancient Egyptian Sounded Like

  • In this video I reconstruct a sentence in the Ancient Egyptian language, circa 2500 BC. As I discuss in the video, despite the language being written with seemingly indecipherable hieroglyphics, scholars have put a lot of work into reconstructing pronunciation. In fact, there are hundreds of words whose pronunciation we believe we know with some degree of accuracy. So I decided to make my own sentence entirely out of these words! Here are some caveats:
    * The grammar is probably outrageously off – I just strung the words together without their conjugations, many of which are not known.
    * I somewhat embellished the pronunciation of certain sounds like /k/ which I turned into a more Middle Eastern sounding /q/
    * The accent is sort of Arabic / Middle Eastern, which is my best guess to what ancient Egyptians would have sounded like.
To be honest this is more for fun that anything else, and I definitely make no representations as to the accuracy of this sentence, but I’m pretty proud to share what I’ve learned about Ancient Egyptian and make my best guess as to how the language sounded! Hope you enjoyed the video!
