The 1970s were a golden age for Somali music, but have since sadly been forgotten. This song is a remnant of that time, written in 1971 by Mahamud Abdullahi Sangub, just after the adoption of the new government. Abidi Baalwan serves as the leading voice, while the rest is sung by the Waabari Choir of Mogadishu. The song is an uplifting tone, calling upon all Africans to reject any form of colonialism, and be proud of their race and culture. The title, "Midab gumaysi diida", means "Reject the color of imperialism". The song was played at the opening ceremony of many summits of the Organisation of African Unity, which was succeeded by the African Union in 2002. Some other info: The man in the fourth image is Siad Barre, who lead Somalia from the founding of the Democratic Republic in 1969, until 1991. This song was very difficult to find lyrics for and translate, so I apologize if any of the translations are worded strangely! You can join my discord server here: discord.gg/9EtS4PC6SW
