Guitarist Jim Dexter had an alternate tuning on his Guild acoustic (C#G# D# G# A# D#). When I strummed it I immediately felt inspired to write something. I looked around his room and saw a Michael Hedges poster that read "Club Alegria". I thought it read "Club Algeria". Algeria opened up a lot of possibilities. The song wrote itself in about a half hour. Very easy to produce. Just me on acoustic, some programming and an exotic simulated sax sound from some Roland keyboard. Catchy enough. I wish that sort of inspiration happened more often.

When the reign is over and the crown is off your head
And the fear of being washed up is at hand
Keep an eye on endings - they can dial in your sleep
But don’t accept the charges when they call
Under the gun?
The shelter that you’ve been praying for
Is under the sign - just three blocks down past the credit store
(Still gotta a place for ya)
Club Algeria just as cool as it ‘s always been
Club interior bare your soul and a little skin
Club Algeria
I recall the troubles that I had in younger times
When a friend could not be counted on one hand
Then a voice from inside called my name
Son rejoice - come in - release your pain
And meet the other side of Life
Under the gun - the answer that I was looking for
Was under the sign just 3 blocks down past the liquor store
(Still gotta a place for ya)
Club Algeria just as cool as it used to be
Club interior - bare your soul with some dignity
Club Algeria - Egypt waits for your rosaries
Club Algeria -
Sweet music drawn from sacred scriptures
Dancing rug to rug
Poor outside losers live so empty
Disconnected from our SMPTE code...
Glad to see your face here
I believe I know your name
Yes I’ve got a gold solution for your tears
Under the gun? -
Ms. Wheel of Fortune will take the floor
Under the sign
You won’t believe what we have in store
(Still gotta a place for ya)
Club Algeria just as cool as it’s always been
Club interior bare your soul and a little skin
Club Algeria just as smooth as it used to be
Club Interior - Egypt cries for your rosaries
