The first of group H and the last country from Africa that we will encounter. The finish line draws ever nearer...
This is quite a unique anthem in how light-hearted it is. The constant short articulations really enhance this feature. Listening back, I really enjoy the sound I was able to get in the bass line. I think it really sounds like a baritone saxophone at work!
Here is sheet music I was able to find online:
www.algerianembassy-japan.jp/about-algeria/docs/qassaman/qassaman-notes.pdf, although I don't recall using this score that much, as I believe I found it after having already worked on transcribing the anthem by ear. I have not personally looked over this score much, but I'm sure it's a good score to use if you want to enjoy the Algerian anthem and play it yourself.
The National Anthem of Algeria (Kassaman or Qassaman, meaning We Pledge) was adopted in 1963 shortly after Algeria achieved its independence. The lyrics were written first in 1956 by Moufdi Zakaria, an Algerian poet. Zakaria had been imprisoned for his involvement in politics, and it is said that he wrote the verses of Kassaman using his own blood on his cell wall.
The music was composed by an Egyptian composer and singer, Mohamed Fawzi, who wrote the music in the same year as its adoption as the official anthem of Algeria.
Parts of the Kassaman directly address France, who was the former colonial power in Algeria.
