The song 'Mwaha Mwema' from the 2002 compilation album 'Tour D'Afrique' by the singer Nawal who hails from the Comoros Islands located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa was born into a Muslim family of musicians and was influenced early on by the Sufi chanting in mosques and twarab music. She combines sounds from her Comoran heritage and influences from Arabic and African styles and is a multi instrumentalist playing guitar, qanbus, gambusi (a traditional stringed instrument), flute, mbira, daf and bendir (percussion instruments). She is known as 'The Voice of Comoros'.
