Mongongo vibes : traditional mouthbow music of Gabon

Bokayé! The mongongo is a traditional musical instrument of Gabon, Africa, originally invented by the Pygmy people for bringing on heightened states of awareness and for communicating with the Divine. The bow is made from a special type of wood, the string is made from a vine. The thin stick is used to hit the string, the thick stick to change the pitch of the string, and the mouth acts as a resonator to control harmonics. The rhythmo-melodic patterns played here are classical to Bwiti, a disappearing but vibrant spiritual tradition practiced by people of the rainforest in Gabon.
