Sékouba Bambino has been in the forefront of Guinean music since 1983, when at the age of 19 he became the singer of the legendary Bembeya Jazz. In the early ’90s he went on to a successful career under his own name, gathering a large fan-base across West Africa, as well as gaining international attention as a member of Afro-salsa-super-group, ‘Africando’. In 2012 he celebrated the 20th anniversary of his solo career by releasing two stylistically different albums at once, reflecting the duality of his profile as a successful pop singer and as a modern griot: Innovation, a shiny Afro-pop production reworking some of his many hits in a zouk style; and Diatiguyw / The Griot’s Craft, an acoustic, balafon and ngoni laced album, dedicated to his mentors and containing trenchant social commentary.
