Mozambican media have reported a spate of attacks by Islamists since October, when police stations were attacked in the north, a predominantly Muslim region which lies near one of the world's biggest untapped offshore gas fields. Some reports say attacks are driven by economic inequalities in the natural gas rich province. Residents call the attackers “Al Shabab”, but there has been no clear link determined, and Al Shabab never claimed any of the attacks.
